UVA mechanical engineering major, Darius Carter, presents his research at the 25th Anniversary LSAMP Conference

UVA student Darius Carter (pictured), along with scholars from six other VA-NC Alliance schools, presented his research: Study of Cetacean Fluke Structure’s Effect on Hydrodynamic Performance on February 23rd during the 25th Anniversary LSAMP Research Symposium in National Harbor, MD. Approximately 700 attendees from across the United States participated in this 25th anniversary celebration of the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) and paid homage to our namesake, the late Congressman Louis Stokes, on what would have been his 91st birthday. In an article published by Diverse Issues In Higher Education about the conference, Arizona State University Ph.D. student, Jasmine Jackson, emphasized the importance of diversifying the STEM workforce: "You have to have a diverse pool of scientists because my ideas can be different from a Latina's ideas or a White American's ideas because our cultures are different, so it's very important to have a diverse group of people work together."

Darius Carter is a third year mechanical engineering major at the University of Virginia. He currently serves as President of the UVA chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), as a member of the Cavalier Marching Band, and as a Center for Diversity in Engineering peer mentor.
